CONTRIBUTOR GUIDELINES
SA Angler welcomes contributions from freelance writers. We have a team of regular contributors, many of whom have been with us for many years, but we’re always on the look out for new talent.
If you’d like to try your hand at putting a feature story together, here is a list of the important issues to keep in mind:
- Story lengths generally vary between 1500-3000 words, with 2200 being a reasonable average. We do run longer features at times, but these are generally split and run over two consecutive issues.
- Articles must be submitted on disk and should be in Microsoft Word format. Single line spacing only.
- Topics may vary between purely technical, a mixture of technical and ‘live’ action and purely ‘live’ action. We also welcome stories based on location.
- As we’re a South Australian publication, a large percentage of the articles we run are purely SA-based. Chances of having a story published are far better if the subject matter is local.
- Photography is a key element in any feature article. The better the pictures, the better your chance of seeing them in print. Digital photographs are preferred and the minimum resolution acceptable is 7 mega-pixels. Don’t alter the camera images prior to burning them to disk; that’s our job!
It’s important to provide us with a broad selection of pictures with each
article and we need more than simply people holding fish. Give us a range of
scenery shots, tackle, action (hook ups etc.), fish at the surface and anything
else you think will make the layout interesting and attractive to readers.
Digital pictures should be saved at highest resolution (high j-peg format in
most cameras) and burned to disk. We don’t accept emailed photographs for
feature stories. Most contributors submit pictures and text on the same disk.
- Make sure to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you want your disk returned, although most writers don’t worry about this these days.
- Payment rates will vary according to the quality of text and pictures. Stories that require little or no editing will naturally attract a better page rate.
- Feature stories should be packaged up and addressed to The Editor, SA Angler, PO Box 1096, North Haven SA 5018.
